Can I take my pet to the vet during the Coronavirus lockdown?

Although vet practices fall under the essential services category, the majority of practices throughout the UK have cancelled routine treatments and appointments to keep both pet owners and staff safe during the outbreak.

The following routine treatments and appointments may have been cancelled…

  • Vaccinations
  • Non-essential appointments – weight clinics, puppy sessions, annual health checks
  • Neutering
  • Routine reproductive work

Your vet may be happy to remotely assess and discuss the following…

  • Mild trauma
  • Skin issues, including flea allergic dermatitis
  • Post-operation checks
  • Repeat medication checks
  • Dental complaints
  • Lumps
  • Wounds
  • Eye complaints
  • Jaundice
  • Non-acute lameness

Many vets are on hand should you find your pet needing emergency or urgent treatment.

As the situation is moving quickly it’s important to follow the latest government guidance, but it’s worth understanding what might be classed as an emergency and what vets are advising.

If you think your pet does need to see a vet, always call first to see what the practice recommends.

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons has also created a page with advice for pet owners.*

If you need to attend an emergency appointment, please respect the way your vet operates. Many practices have fewer staff working in shifts and are not allowing owners inside the building to keep everyone safe. Remember, wash your hands before and after visiting your vet. You may want to wash your pet’s lead and harness after visiting too.
