Buddies Breeder – Tony & Trish Cassidy

We recently caught up with Buddies breeders, Tony and Trish Cassidy of Enigmai Cavaliers, who are based in Eastleigh, Hampshire. We asked them a few questions to find out more about their love and knowledge of their breed of choice.

What is your breed of choice?

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

How long have you been breeding for?

‘We have been breeding for just over 17 years now.’

Why this breed?

‘Trish had always wanted a Cavalier. When our Collie Spaniel cross, Holly, turned 10 years old, and was beginning to feel her age, our son wanted to give us a puppy as an early Christmas present. He wanted to be sure that Trish, who has MS, would not be without a companion, so we welcomed Heidi to the family. Needless to say, Holly stayed with us for another five years and saw the birth of Heidi’s puppies, their puppies and the addition of Sasha in 2004.’

Buddies Breeder - Tony & Trish CassidyWhat is the best thing about the breed?

They are loving and adorable companions, who will always be there for you no matter how your day has been.’

What is the worst thing about the breed?

‘We honestly can’t think of a bad thing, but then again, we are biased.’

What is the best thing about being a breeder?

‘The joy on families faces when they find out they are successful in adopting one of our puppies, and the smiles when they come to take him of her home with them.’

What is the worst thing about being a breeder?

‘Losing a puppy in the first days of life. We once lost an entire litter of six, who were stillborn. It was heartbreaking.’

Buddies Breeder - Tony & Trish CassidyHow many litters do you tend to have each year?

‘We usually have 2 to 3 litters each year.’

If you could have any other breed, what would it be?

‘I can’t see us ever having another breed. Once bitten, forever smitten.’

Any other achievements you would like us to share?

‘We always make sure that all of our girls are health checked and have all the relevant certification for them and the stud dog to pass on to the new owners and their vets. Given the latest breeding regulations and laws, we are proud to have been licensed by Eastleigh Borough Council since 2006, with yearly inspections and certification.

We love each of our litters. Trish cries for every puppy that leaves the door to a new home – so far that’s 87!’

A huge thank you to Tony and Trish for taking the time to chat with us. To find out more about Enigmai Cavaliers, you can visit their Facebook page here.
