Buddies Breeder – Sonia Snell
Meet Buddies breeder Sonia. We caught up with Torquay based Sonia, to find out more about her passion for the Papillon.
How long have you been breeding?
‘Over 30 years now. I started out with Australian Shepherds. I showed them and enjoyed training and competing at working trials and obedience. My first Border Collie joined me just after and got hooked on showing. My first dog won 5 reserve CC’s and 2 CC’s. I have had Papillons for 5 years now. As I’m now older and have arthritis, I changed breeds because I can’t run around the show ring like I used to.
Why this breed?
‘They are smaller, and I have time on my hands now being retired.’
What is the best thing about the breed?
‘For me, the best thing about this breed is the lovely temperaments. They love everyone, get on with other dogs, so they are an excellent choice both as a pet or for working.’
What is the worst thing about the breed?
‘I think the worst thing about the Papillon is they don’t like to be alone for long, so definitely not for working families.’
What is the best thing about being a breeder?
‘The best part is all the feedback from owners, and watching my puppies grow into wonderful adults.’
What is the worst thing about being a breeder?
‘The Worst thing about being a breeder is the chance you may lose a puppy. Toy breeds are not always easy, and some are born very small and do not always make it.’
If you could have any other breed, what would it be?
‘It would have to be Border Collies because I bred, worked and showed them for years.’
How many litters to you have each year?
‘I tend to have 2 litters per year.’
Any achievements or info to add?
‘I raise my puppies at home and with puppy culture, it’s puppy lead training and builds them with confidence, giving my pups the best start in life.
I’m now medically retired, so I have lots more time for my Papillons. I currently have 7, one of which is a puppy. We still have 2 Border Collies which are my husband’s because he loves a daily hike from beach to beach in Devon.’
A big thankyou to Sonia for sharing her passion and knowledge of this beautiful breed.
