Buddies Breeders – Lynda Hewett
We recently caught up with Buddies Breeder Lynda Hewett, who has been breeding German Spitz since 2005.
We asked Lynda a few questions to find out more about her and this fabulous breed.
Why this breed?
‘I chose this breed after seeing them at an open show. I was looking for a smaller breed, as following an accident, I could no longer work obedience with my Border Collies and German Shepherds. The Spitz really took my eye. I also choose the breed for their health.’
How long have you been breeding?
‘I bred my 1st litter in 2005 from a Runfold Bitch and Runfold Dog. I will always be grateful to Eddie Andrew for allowing me to have my 1st Spitz. There were 4 pups in my first litter, and I decided to keep a black male pup.
I have bred 29 puppies to date. My last litter of 6 is only just 6 months old from which I have kept a Bitch Inca Spellcast Talking Point AI. I have high hopes for this girl as I have bred 9 champions to date.’
Tell us about your achievements.
‘The black pup I kept from my first litter exceeded all my expectations. He became my 1st home-bred Champion CH Spellcast Talk To Me JW, aka James.
James won 29 CC’s and is the only Mittel to ever win a group and RBIS at ‘3 Counties all breed Championship show’ in 2009, Making Spellcast a Name of Champions.
I am very proud of my achievements. This is proof that you don’t have to breed lots of dogs to achieve top breeder status. James, CH Spellcast Talk To Me, won Best of Breed at Crufts 2012. Another of my dogs, Ant, CH Spellcast Shout About It won Best of Breed at Crufts 2015.
I am proud of my dogs and love them all. Those Spellcast who stay here for life run free every day getting wet and a muddy enjoying life.’
What’s the best thing about the breed?
‘I think the best thing about this breed is non-smelling easy coat. They are such happy dogs.’
What’s the worst thing about the breed?
‘They can be quite yappy dogs.’
If you could have any other breed, what would it be?
‘It would definitely be the St Bernard. I love then.’
A big thank you to Lynda for taking the time to talk to us and sharing her love of German Spitz. We are always on the look out for breeder to feature in our blogs. If you would like to get involved, email us at Hello@Buddies.co.uk for more info.
