Buddies Breeders – Jane Baker
We recently caught up with Buddies breeder Jane Baker. Jane, who is based in South Yorkshire, has been breeding Parson Russell Terriers for over 25 years.
We asked Jane some questions to find out more about this fabulous breed.
Why this breed?
‘I used to show Doberman’s, but one day, I saw a man walking with 6 Parsons and I fell in love with them. It’s snowballed from there. Parsons make great family dogs that love to be out and about but also love to curl up with you on a cold day on the sofa.’
What’s the best thing about the breed?
‘The best thing about the breed, is that they are intelligent active little dogs with a big heart. They love to be with people and love all activities. They are also very quick to learn. As well as being successful show dogs, many of our pups have made successful agility and fly ball dogs too.’
What is the worst thing about the breed?
‘The worst thing about the breed is they can have a mind of their own and be quite stubborn.’
What is the best thing about being a breeder?
‘I love breeding. I enjoy seeing them thrive and go off to their new homes with happy loving owners. Its great to receive photos of the puppies growing up into healthy happy dogs.’
What is the worst thing about being a breeder?
‘The worst thing about being a breeder is not having enough sleep when pups are very young. The lack of a holiday too.’
How many litters do you have per year?
‘I usually have about 4 litters a year.’
If you could have another breed, what would it be?
‘If I could have any other breed it would be American Bulldogs, I have two and they are the most loving, affectionate dogs around and love the Terriers.’
Tell us about your achievements with the breed
‘I have had a lot of success in the ring with our dogs, being top breeder 2008 to 2011, 2014 and 2016 to 2018. I was the joint top breeder in Terrier group in 2016. I have bred 20 Champions, with 118 CCs and 114 RCCs. I was also awarded the Accolade of Excellence by KC.
In 2010 at Crufts we took Best Dog, Best Bitch, Reserve Bitch and Best of Breed, a year we will never forget. We have now retired from showing and are having some fun doing agility with our dogs.’
