Buddies Breeders – Caroline Lee-Slater
We recently caught up with Buddies breeder Caroline Lee-Slater of Graycaz Papillons, who has been breeding Papillons since 1986.
Caroline answered some questions for us, so that we could find out more about her and her breed of choice.
What is your breed?
‘I breed Papillons because, they are intelligent, active, loving dogs. They are highly collectable, once you have one, you are never without one.
When I was 2 years old, one of the memories of my grandfather was with a butterfly. As the Papillon is a butterfly dog, I felt it was an omen.’
What is the best thing about the breed?
‘I think the best thing about the breed, is their intelligence and willingness to learn, as well as being generally long lived.’
What is the worst thing about the breed?
‘The worst thing is that they are collectable, therefore not many people stay with just one.’
What is the best thing about being a breeder?
‘For me, the best thing about being a breeder is bringing new life to the world, and the happiness the pups can bring to both myself and others.’
What is the worst thing about being a breeder?
‘The worst thing about being a breeder is when things don’t go according to plan. Sadly, you have many sleepless nights worrying over either a pup or their Dam. When you lose one, it becomes unbearable.’
If you could have any other breed, what would it be?
‘I have shown many breeds with success in the past, but I have to say, the best dog I ever had, was my Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, who I feel are underestimated as a pet. They are so loyal, don’t shed hair, very well behaved and extremely loving.’
How many Papillon litters do you have each year?
‘I generally only have 2 litters a year.’
How long have you been a Buddies breeder?
‘I have only recently Joined Buddies. I was previously with an insurance company which I was not happy with. I find Buddies to be very friendly, helpful and above all, offer great policies.’
Tell us about your achievements –
‘I have in the past been Top Breeder for my Breed for 4 years and bred many champions. I have also won Best of Breed at Crufts, been a Toy Group Winner and had many Best in Show titles at Club shows. I achieved top dog in breed for the year, including top Papillon 2018, with Holly, a bitch now on 20 CC’s. I give CC’s in both Papillons & Bichon Frise. My late parents were top breeders of Bichon Frise, hence myself being brought up with dogs and breeding.
Caroline also took Best Puppy In Show at UK Toy Dog Show under well respected judge Jill Peak. Magic Sunrise Believe In Me (imp lva), owned by myself and a thrilled Christine Kewley, bred by Julija Pavlova.
A huge thank you to Caroline for sharing her love and knowledge of the breed with us.
