Buddies Breeder – Maureen Thompson
We recently caught up with new Buddies Breeder, Maureen Thompson.
Maureen, who is based in Alfreton, Derbyshire, has been breeding for almost 40 years. We asked Maureen a few questions to find out more about her breed of choice and her wealth of experience breeding.
How long have you been breeding for?
‘My very first litter was Dobermann back in 1980. My first litter of Akita’s were born in 1997, and my very first litter of Japanese Akita Inu were born ten years ago, in 2009.’
What is your current breed of choice?
‘The Japanese Akita Inu’
Why this breed?
‘I just love the primitive qualities. They have such high intelligence and natural beauty.’
What is the best thing about this breed?
‘Their loyalty and appearance. They also have such great personality.’
What is the worst thing about this breed?
‘Definitely their dominance towards other dogs. Something potential new owners should be aware of’
What is the best thing about being a breeder?
‘I love that I have the opportunity to preserve the future of the breed.’
What is the worst/hardest thing about a breeder?
‘Trying to source good homes for my puppies.’
If you could have any other breed, what would it be?
‘I would stick to the Japanese breeds.’
How many litters do you have per year?
‘Usually just the 1 or 2.’
Tell us a little more about your experience and achievements…
‘I am currently a KC judge approved to award CC’s in 4 breeds. I have been lucky enough to Judge Japanese Akita Inu and Akita across Europe.
I am a KC Breed Education Co-ordinator (BEC) for Japanese Akita Inu and the Founding member of the JAI breed club.
I have owned and bred 11 JAI Champions (7 home bred – 2 are Multi. Int. Ch’s), 2 of which are JAI Crufts Best of Breed winners! I have also won the Top Breeder award for JAI 7 times in 10 years.
