We recently caught up with Leicestershire based Buddies Breeder, Caroline Bowles-Robinson, who breeds King Charles Spaniels.
Thought to have originated in the Far East, King Charles Spaniels were first seen in Europe during the 16th century. They were made famous by their association with King Charles mid-16th century.
‘King Charles Spaniels were not my first choice of breed, in fact I have had Cocker, American Cocker, English Springer and Sussex Spaniels. English Springer Spaniels were my foundation breed and hold a special place in my heart.’ Says Caroline.
‘I bred my first litter of Springers in 1984. Even back then I produced feeding plans for each puppy and sold them with pet insurance as I believe strongly that a breeder should be responsible and provide both new families and their new addition with the best possible security and start in life.’
‘In 2004, my Mum came to live with me and I believed that a small lap dog would aid her health; we had always owned small dogs in the family. As a spaniel lover I considered the options and purchased a lovely female King Charles Spaniel, which I named Chanel. She was perfect for my Mum and me, I really fell for this quirky fun breed.’ Adds Caroline.
Caroline has had accomplishments in past breeds, but her major showing achievements have been in King Charles Spaniels. Caroline has bred and shown numerous King Charles Champions, and also bred and owns the top winning female, Sklar, in the breed who broke the long-standing record held for over 35 years. Caroline and her award-winning female made it onto television having been shortlisted in the final 8 in her group at Crufts. Skylar continues her winning in the show ring at the age of six and has recently returned with Best female in breed from the World Show.
‘I award CC’s in both English Springers and King Charles, which is the highest judging level within a breed. I judge numerous other breeds at Open show level.’ Says Caroline.
Caroline is still in touch with owners from her very first litter. These owners have since become great friends of Caroline and her family.
‘As a breeder it means so much to receive a card at Christmas with a photograph of their very special family member.’
‘I breed rarely and selectively. As my breed is on the ‘KC vulnerable breed register’ it is imperative I have the perfect homes lined up for my very precious babies.’
‘I am proud to say that I have bred happy, healthy, loving dogs who are a joy to live with.’ Adds Caroline.
A big thank you to Caroline for taking the time to talk to us. If you are a Buddies Breeder and would like to tell us more about yourself and your chosen breed, email the team at Hello@Buddies.co.uk.
