I'm sorry to rain on your picnic, but Chanel is NOT the world's oldest dog, and needs to live much longer to justify the title. Many dogs are (or were) older than Chanel.

Guinness Book of World Records requires written proof of all claims, which rules out many older animals.

OhmyNewsInternational has published a story I wrote about the world's oldest dog, an Australian sheepdog which lived for 29 years, five months and seven days.

See http://tinyurl.com/cpvx7n

You are welcome to copy it.

Cheers, Eric.

POSTSCRIPT: Chanel's owner, Denice Shaughnessy, has just told me "What you fail to mention in your article is that NONE of the other dogs can prove their age. The people who owned the dogs can say the dog is 100 but unless you can prove it it doesn't make it so. Being that Chanel can prove her age then she is the oldest dog according to Guinness."

Hi,
Commonsense is not very common anymore! One doesn't need a survey to learn about the harmful physical and psycological effects these cruel devices inflict!

This well meaning Professor just needs to do some 'on the ground' field work in the Welfare area to see what people do with these devices.

In the kindest of hands they create confusion and mistrust in the animal. In ignorant, uneducated and unkind hands they are used for torment, they should be banned because they leave helpless animals who have no voice in extremely vulnerable situations.

They are way too open to abuse in the mass population to ever be justified. The use of pain to train is unnecessary and in no way creates any long term positive results.

The flourishing on the net of the sale of these devices is because they offer higher profit margins than standard leash, harness type devices. It's simply $ driven and any so called trainer recommending a shock collar (or a pinch collar) is not, IMHO, a trainer of any note.

Please stop with the efforts to justify the use of these devices and simply let commonsense speak up for our helpless and vulnerable pets... BAN SHOCK COLLARS!

Cheers,
Lou-ann

Yeah, the Mayor is a character, however, this story is totally inaccurate! The dog was stuck and unable to get up, but the <ayor did not climb any ladder to reach the dog. He was invited in by the dog's owner who was unaware his pet had gotten out onto the balcony and gotten stuck. As for the stray he rescued and gave to another family, the dog's previous owner ignored multiple attempts to get him to reclaim his dog and reimburse the rescue organization for its medical care. The dog he 'stole' from the shelter ended up losing a leg because it did not receive proper care in time and likely would have died had the Mayor not intervened. By the way, he still has that dog. Unfortunately, the Brownsville Herald is not very well known for being accurate. Read the real story on the Mayor's webpage at www.bebo.com/mayorpat.

Dogs do not normally soil there own beds, so it seems to me that by them being caged for 2 and half years that they have unfortunately learned this behaviour. Her nervousness must be from being inside the cage for those years and I think she was more than likely treated very cruelly. She will see outside as total freedom and inside as possibly a place of torture? You can buy plug in dog pheramone items from your local vetinary surgery and these are meant to relax dogs when they are stressed etc, you could try those??

Do get your vet to check the dog and give an opinion. It may be a food allergy, environment allergy or stress related. The type of flea treatment you use may be relevant, some mean the dog has to be bitten by the flea for the chemical to work and a badly allergic dog will have bad patches.
Where the patches are and if they are clean or weeping is also a clue as to the cause. It is worth seeing your vet and possible a good behaviourist too.

In response to Ms Aldridge, I got my puppy last week and wondered the very same thing and I been researching the topic. Apparently you are only supposed to wash your dog 3-4 times per year. However, I asked my vet and he said it depends on yourself and the dog. Will the dog be a working dog and be outside alot? or is it going to be a house dog in which it hardly ever leaves the house? If it is the first then 3-4 times per year is sufficient due to natural oils in the hair and skin. If it is the latter then you can wash it as many times as you wish, even everyday but don't use your regular dog shampoo, use the leading brand of baby shampoo (I think you know which one I mean!) Also it depends on whether the puppy has been treated with flea products ask the breeder whether he has been treated with fleas. But you can wash your puppy as soon as he comes home.
