German Shepherds, or Alsatians, are an intelligent, strong breed of dog, happy in both a working or home environment. They are established as firm favourites with security agencies. Despite their size and strength, German Shepherds enjoy the family home and are excellent companions to both children and other household pets.
The ideal daily exercise routine for an adult should include at least two 30 minute periods of free running in a safe open space. Chasing balls is a favourite! Puppies need to avoid activities that encourage galloping and jumping until they are fully mature and the bones are ‘set’. Walking on the lead and playing around the home will be sufficient during the early months.
The coat needs brushing with a stiff brush twice a week, except during the moulting season, where brushing twice daily will minimise hairs being shed over the house. Bathing is an occasional requirement, use dog specific product to maintain the dog’s naturally protective oils.
German Shepherds take to training easily, excelling at work that involves listening and intelligence. They are natural pack animals and look to their pack leader, you, to show the way. Do not leave this dog on its own for long periods of the day.
When choosing a puppy, look for parents that display a calm and balanced temperament.
