I am a small breeder who breeds only from low Hip Scored dogs/bitches to the K.C. Standard and Breed Council Charter for breeders, I limit my bitches to producing no more than 3 litters I will not deliberately breed coat colours that are considered a fault or highly undesirable. Temperament and health are my priorities when breeding

There is really a big difference between a working shepherd and a show shepherd, the working shepherd is very high strung, and a person who is not active should never get a working dog, the show shepherd is calmer, and likes both indoor and out door living, both types need to be well socialized, with people and animals. Both types love to work, and are suited for most types of jobs. I like the show shepherd and find them easier to train because the working shepherd takes a good hour to settle down they have so much energy. Love both types and love to watch them work. atendam@goodshepherds.com

I have a fabulous long haired english working lines GSD who has a fabulous temperament. This is an 'old fashioned' dog with straight back and very athletic. She is intelligent and keen to please and learn. She has had one litter of pups - sire working trials dog so pups very intelligent and full of life. Suitable for active pet home or particularly for agility, obedience and/or working trials. I hope to keep the old type of good working lines going. If you want to do sports with your shep I would seek out a working lines breeder to get the athleticism which may have been lost in some show lines. You may not be able to show long haired sheps, but they make very good companions and can compete in KC activities. It is only a 'fault' in the show ring :-) See me on Champdogs

when looking to buy a gsd pup things you should ask the breeder are why did they do this particular mating(what were they hoping to achieve) hip/elbow scores if parents not done then stay away hips under20 elbows 0 not more than 12 on any one hip ie a score of 16/8 i would stay way. has sire been tested for haemophillia if not stay away are parents kc reg are they dna tested can dam be seen are all pups kc reg have they been wormed and tatoo'ed how many in litter what colour are they (whites blue's liver's etc are faults they are not rare they are disqualifying faults) long coats are not a different breed they are a fault have hind dew claws if any been removed and remember your small puppy will grow into a medium sized dog that will need good training and grooming every day exercise keep to a minimum for the first year to 18 months if you give your dog the love and attention he desires then you will be rewarded with the most loving companion you could ask for

The Alsatian is one of the noblist dogs of them all. They are faithfull to their owner and will protect them with their life. make sure you get a puppy from parents with good temperments. Some say Man work is good for this dog but I disagree and again I have had this breed since I was a boy and I am now 57 yrs old. I have had many great dogs Mikadene Highlander being one of the greatest of all. He produced some great dogs and his offspring have been sent all over the World. They do need a certain ammount of work to keep them supple and toned up , but not the 5 miles a day some will tell you. Please never leave a small child alone with any dog and make sure no one can come into contact with any type of dog. This breed is Loyal and very majestic. Please be aware of rogue breeders that don't adhere to the Breed standard and will mate any bitch to any dog at will just to breed puppies. There are two types one English and two the germanic type. I prefer the old fashioned Alsatian. I don't encourage schutsund at all. Mikadene Mike

Suggested information that potential owners should ask regarding GSD's 1. Are parents hip/elbow scored and what are the results (Breed average for hips is 19 - elbow score 0) 2. Has sire dog been tested clear for Haemophilia A 3. Are parents KC registered and is pup KC registered - are there endorsements on KC Registration regarding breeding and Export. 4. Can parents be seen with puppies

I am a breeder and handle my own in american conformation. When you are looking for a dog or pup, make sure they have done their health tests and have copies for you to see (and get if you buy one from someone), make sure they have at least one of the parents on site so you can get an idea of what yours will be full grown. Ask a bunch of questions, no question is dumb and if they seem to not have the time for you then look elsewhere, a good breeder will make sure that their pup is going to a good home and not to just anyone.
