The Abyssinian, or Aby, is a medium-sized, muscular cat with a bright expression. Due to its feral looks, it is sometimes described as a miniature lynx or jungle cat. The Aby comes in a variety of colours, but all display the characteristic ticking of the coat.
While most are happy, independent characters, they are also extremely affectionate pets, greeting their owners with a distinctive trilling sound. Abyssinians are highly intelligent and quick to learn. They adore human company and get on well with other cats, adapting easily to sharing their home with feline companions.
The origin of the Abyssinian is shrouded in mystery. While some owners like to claim that their cats descend from ancient Egypt, there is little evidence to prove the fact.
At the lowest point, there were only around 12 studs, but today this is a thriving breed with just over 50 breeders in the UK. They have worked hard to produce a healthy population with a broad genetic base.
